The only differences between a 360 and a 390 are the crank and rods. They are almost 1/8″ in the hole when the crank is at TDC!
The ERA cobra guys did a study on a 390 motor. The all-iron version weighs 610 lbs stock. By adding aluminum heads, manifold, and water pump they got the weight down to 520 lbs.

The 428 came out in the late '60's. Has a smaller bore than the 427 (closer to the 406) and a longer stroke. The smaller bore was easier for Ford to manage with machining the castings in the '60's. The 429 came out later.

Yes you are correct and to add to that, the low compression has nothing to do with the heads. As already noted, all regular FE engines (352, 390, 410 and even the standard 428) usd the same heads in a given year. That is to say a 67 352 and a 67 428 will both have a C7AE-A heads or a 69 360 and 390 will both have the same C8AE-H heads.

The 360 and 390 car/truck motors are very similar engines from the late 60's on. They both used the same heads and blocks. The difference is in the crank, rods and pistons. Basically a 352 crank in a 390 block. 4.05 bore and 3.50 stroke. There is absolute interchange with these motors between a truck and a car.

You want the 6291 heads. Only came on 1970 and early '71 360, 390 (1970 only) and 401 (early '71 only). They are dog leg heads with a 50 cc chamber and adjustable rocker set-up. As far as intake port size, small ports are 7/8 x 2, large ports are 1 x 2 3/16. I've always used the small port gaskets on my 360's and they never blocked any of the port. So my conclusion was that only the 360 J, 340 X, and 318 4-bbl heads had the large ports. I'll go out to the shed w/ my dial calipers and measure a couple heads in a bit.

All FE series motors will interchange parts the 428 being the long stroke . I mean all from 332, 352, 360, 390, 410, 427,and 428..... If the heads are 428 send me the number off them it should be between #2 & #3 spark plug and start like C6AE-AA ..And by the way the only two engines using the long 3.784 stroke is the 428 & the 410 mercury motors..
If the crack is only in the valve seat, and does not extend into the chamber, or in between the valve seats, replacing the seats will repair them. I wouldn't trust too many folks with cast iron repairs. Dover Cylinder Head in Atlanta is one I would trust, though. Oh and the port sizes on the Magnums are same as the LA 340/360.

Since we really don't know any specifics about the engine, Normally the 318 head will have a smaller sized combustion chamber than the 360 head, which would result in a higher compression ratio than the 360 head with all other variables being the same. I installed these into a 258 cylinder head (stock valve sizes are same as 304) and picked up an easy 30 HP. Power diference was night-n-day before and after.
Cadillac's motor displaced 331 cubic inches through 1955. In 1956, the blocks were punched to 365 and in 1959 stroked and punched to 390. This motor was utilitized in new Caddies through 1962. Best head would be 343/390, or early (first 2 years of production, i think) 401 heads. Good luck finding a pair, theses heads have rectangular exhaust ports, not the dog leg style. Not necessary, but if you run a cross a set snag 'em. All AMC mills share the same bell housing pattern. 258, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401. They are balanced different.

There are a number of 'replacement blocks' AMC used from 1970-up with no casting numbers. It is not uncommon for someone selling a AMC to believe that their engine is a '390 or 401' when in fact it is a 360 or 343. They all appear the same! So simply make sure and crawl under the vehicle. In Mexico AMC produced a "big Mexican Six" a bored of 282-6.
