I can't think of a single situation where more cores is better than fewer cores when both processors have the same cumulative benchmark. Example, if I have an AMD whatever with 8 cores, and an Intel whatever with 4 cores and both have a cumulative application benchmark of ~8500 the Intel chip is going to be more productive - period.

More then 4 - not likely to see benefits. Now, if you want to (and I meen actually do it), stream video - more cores get used, unless you do the frame capturing etc on the GPU - which, most GPU's can do. Rendering. More cores - lot's of cores is far better then a few fast cores in this area.
And having 4 cores means that I have a few on standby whenever I feel like doing input, even when the machine is busy processing stuff. The real issue I see is memory access. Even with a single core did we run into memory bandwidth/latency bottleneck; with 4-6 cores those are 4-6 times as much.

An old school computer enthusiast might say that the hyperthreaded CPU has fewer wait states. I believe that a 2 core hypethreaded CPU can approach the performance of a 4 core SMP cpu, but unless you're concerned with heat, power consumption or cost, 4 real cores will beat 2 cores + 2 virtual cores (of the same design)
