Are a 22 and a 223 the same diameter?

Looking for an answer to the question: Are a 22 and a 223 the same diameter? On this page, we have gathered for you the most accurate and comprehensive information that will fully answer the question: Are a 22 and a 223 the same diameter?

The answer is yes and no. There ARE differences between the .223 Remington as shot in civilian rifles and the 5.56x45 in military use. While the external cartridge dimensions are essentially the same, the .223 Remington is built to SAAMI specs, rated to 50,000 CUP max pressure, and normally has a shorter throat.

The 5.56 NATO has a higher pressure than the 223 round and is one of the two major differences. The 5.56 NATO pressure is about 58,000 psi and the 223 round is approximately 55,000 psi. While that doesn't seem like much on its face, a mere 3,000 psi, the case difference in the chamber balloons it to a 10,000 psi difference.

The truth is that although they are almost similar, slight differences in the make of the 223 allow it to perform differently from the 5.56. It is important that you note the 5.56 is a military grade ammo while the 223 is civilian issued sporting ammo.
